English

 

English is essential for us all to be able to communicate effectively through the written and spoken word. To achieve this we aim to instill in children a love for books, an appreciation of the creative arts, such as drama and poetry, and an ability to express themselves with confidence and clarity. 

English is divided into three main areas:

  1. Spoken Language
  2. Reading
  3. Writing (including SPAG - spelling, punctuation and grammar)

 

Spoken language is of central importance to children’s development and opportunities are provided for children to express and develop ideas, engage in discussion and exchange views sensitively, competently and coherently. Through exposure to a variety of activities and situations, children are encouraged to develop the skills to use speech appropriately, being able to adjust ways of speaking according to the occasion, and develop a growing ability to listen attentively.

Reading is a high priority in the school. Through the teaching of reading, every attempt is made to promote the development of the ability to read, understand and respond to all types of writing, as well as the development of information retrieval strategies for the purpose of study. Parents’ and teachers’ attitudes towards books are without doubt a key factor. School policy encourages parents to share books with their children, read aloud to them and talk about the stories they have enjoyed together.

 

Our aim is to equip children not only with the skill to read but to encourage "a love of reading". It is our wish to present reading in such a way that we can foster a love, appreciation and respect for books. Reading journals have been kept by every child in the school and a reading diary in the home-school book which details your child’s progress.

 

Writing for different purposes and audiences is a life skill. We strive to develop in children a growing ability to write fluently and grammatically with meaning, in a variety of styles, in line with National Curriculum requirements. In order to cater for our children’s different needs, they are grouped in three sets according to ability. Regular teacher assessments enable us to track the children's progress.

 

It is our aim to equip children with the capacity to choose the appropriate style for each occasion; to encourage an ever growing vocabulary; and accuracy in the choice of words and their spelling. Through careful teaching, encouragement and exposure to a variety of writing styles we hope to encourage a respect for the joy in the written word.

 

In terms of handwriting, we wish the children to develop a fluent and legible style and enable an attitude of pride in the presentation of their work. For this purpose, school policy states that children use black ink when they have developed a consistent style and a 'pen-licence' has been achieved. Children in year 6 are encouraged to use fountain pen.
