Remembrance Assembly

Today, we held a special assembly to commemorate Armistice Day - 11 o'clock on the 11th day of the 11th month - the time that World War I came to an end. With the centenery of the outbreak of war, it was important to recognise this day in our history. The cannon blast boomed from the church on the dot of 11am and our hall, packed with 360 children and all members of staff, fell silent for 2 minutes until the second blast sounded.

Remembrance bands are to be issued to the children who represented the school on the parade on Remembrance Sunday and poppy seeds cast by members of each year group. Poppies have been on sale since last week, with one collection box, already filled and the second filling fast.

The Headteacher read a copy of an original letter from a soldier in the trenches to his wife and family back in England - he was the Great Grandfather of one of our past pupils. We listened to a recording of an extract from a journal written by a soldier in the trenches and sung "Make me a channel of your peace" - The Prayer of St Francis.

With music, pictures and the poem and prayer used at the Cenotaph, the assembly was a fitting tribute to those who gave their lives, have been wounded or continue to serve in the Armed Forces. We made special mention of three of our past pupils who are currently in the forces.
